The prospect of finding a sleep-away camp that is dietary-restriction friendly can often be a looming cloud overhead, what with the pressure of communication, research, etc. However, I feel proud to say that - through much trial and error over the years - I've developed a general outline of how to approach the matter. But beforehand, I feel the need to emphasize that this is what works for me personally, meaning it may not be the best for others.
The first bump in the road is finding a camp that can navigate allergies/dietary restrictions to begin with. When first attending sleep-away camp (Situation A), I went to a camp that was only for those with allergies. In that situation, it was top 9 allergen free, a wonderful anomaly. So, if you've never tried to navigate sleep-away camps with allergies yet, I would suggest trying to find a camp with the sole purpose of food-related safety. It's an ideal starting place!
However, if you're already experienced/want to try something different, I would suggest Situation B: finding a camp that aligns with one's interests but can also accommodate one's needs. For example, I recently attended a music related sleep-away camp as I play piano and cello and can sing (to a mediocre extent!). In that case, I did research with my family to find a place that matched my passions AND could accommodate my allergies. Both Situation A and Situation B have worked wonderfully in the past!
Next is another key step: communication. This pertains mostly to "Situation B". If the camp isn't focused on being nut free, gluten free, etc., I would recommend reaching out by email and explain the situation (e.g.: "I'm a camper who can't eat [food], and I wanted to discuss how that would work."). Clear communication is everything!
One final tip: I would recommend a camp that allows either parental communication or personal devices while away. Even at a top 9 allergen free camp, I panicked when not able to contact my parents - even out of homesickness. On the other hand, when I was given that ability, I was much more at ease.
Sleep-away camp should be memorable and enjoyable, not stressful. 💛
Until next time,
Genuine GF
