Sleepovers and overnight trips can either be a source of extreme stress and anxiety, or they can be comfortable and well-managed. By the end of this article, I hope you will be able to manifest the latter. So, here we go again with a list of my tips :)
Reach out!
In my mind, the BEST thing you can possibly do is reach out to the hosts (assuming it's not yourself, of course). Get in touch, and make sure to be casual about it; talk about how it might work, but ask about the host's comfort zone. I've learned that the worst thing is someone taking responsibility for a gluten free meal when they don't really know how to manage the situation. During your conversation, if you're not prepared to give the host your vote of confidence, the best approach (in my opinion) is simply letting them down gently (if they offered). Again, your safety is the most important thing. I am prepared to say this in every one of my posts: you need to put yourself first in these situations. This isn't at all a selfish move, it is a self-respecting move. Never will I have regret for standing up for myself or for (politely) refusing someone's offer.
Pack snacks/food
Depending on how previous conversations went with the host, things can go a little differently. If you're confident and decided to trust the person in question, I would suggest packing some familiar, delicious snacks just in case but also to share with the group.
If you decided to bring your own food, this takes a little more preparation. Whether it's having a familiar, gluten free pizza delivered or putting some veggies and a sandwich in a cooler, do something that makes you feel safe. And even if you're packing your own dinner, bring some salty finger foods or chips.
Show appreciation
Whether you decided to take up the host's offer, turn it down, etc., make sure to show your appreciation for them nonetheless. They still put in the dedication to talk, maybe even to search, clean, and prepare meals. Give them gratitude!
Until next time,
