While makeup stores can be overwhelming from the get-go, it can be extra stressful if you have celiac disease. But first, let's back up.
Despite what some might think, a lot of makeup is naturally gluten free, and a main reason for that is simply because it's either fruit/flower oils, chemicals, and food coloring. This isn't meant as an insult in any way, just to clarify. If you went to a random brand in Sephora and looked at the ingredients to a lipstick tube, it would most likely not have any gluten. And for those who either simply avoid gluten or who aren't particularly sensitive to a few stray gluten proteins caught in the mix, they would be fine. However, we always need to consider the celiacs who do struggle from those "few stray gluten proteins", the very ones that can send them home sick with the snap of a finger. And this can go back to an entire broader point: just because something doesn't have gluten doesn't necessarily make it gluten free or celiac safe. So, if we're truly looking for a 100% gluten free makeup brand, things can get trickier!
When it all comes down to it, people's decisions about makeup, food, and general celiac safety are all up to them. Every family, every person has constructed different boundaries and rules. I am asymptomatic if I ingest gluten, so I am willing to take the risk of not seeing a certified gluten free label on a lip gloss package. For others, that isn't what keeps them healthy. And while I aim to teach and explain with Genuine GF, I am speaking from my perspective, and if you have celiac or avoid gluten, you should craft your own plan for comfort.
Until next time,
